📊 Key facts

  • Usual adult dose — 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg a day (DailyMed).
  • Age — most adults and children aged 12 or over can take it, but it is not usually given to younger children because it affects tooth development (NHS).
  • Diarrhoea after stopping — watery or bloody stools can appear up to two months or more after the last dose; see a doctor (DailyMed).
  • After a dose — avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes, so the medicine does not irritate the throat (NHS).

🏭 Doxylcap is made by Bangkok Drug and sold as 1 tin of 500 capsules, the only option on this page.

⚠️ Do not use it after an allergic reaction to any tetracycline; the UK label also rules it out in pregnancy and breastfeeding. For anything else, ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking it.

About Doxylcap

What is Doxylcap (doxycycline 100 mg)?

Doxylcap is a tetracycline antibiotic. Its active ingredient is doxycycline 100 mg per capsule.

It stops bacteria from growing and spreading, so it is used for bacterial infections.

The product here is 1 tin of 500 capsules, a pack size and not the amount for one course. How long to take it depends on the infection, so ask a pharmacist or doctor.

This page follows international references: DailyMed, MedlinePlus, the NHS and emc. Uses and doses can differ by country.

What is Doxylcap (doxycycline) used for?

Doxycycline is used for:

  • Bacterial infections such as urinary tract, chest and gum infections, and some sexually transmitted infections
  • Infections spread by ticks, lice, mites and infected animals
  • Acne and rosacea, a facial skin disease; in severe acne it is an add-on treatment
  • Malaria prevention while travelling; protection is not full, so avoid mosquito bites too

A pharmacist or doctor must judge whether bacteria cause your symptoms. See other antibiotics in the antibiotic collection.

How do you take Doxylcap (doxycycline 100 mg)?

How to take it and the dose depend on the illness, so follow a pharmacist's or doctor's advice. General information for adults:

  • Usual dose — 200 mg on the first day (100 mg every 12 hours), then 100 mg a day; more severe infections use 100 mg every 12 hours. More than directed makes side effects more common.
  • Water — swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water, sitting or standing, to lower irritation of the food pipe.
  • After a dose — avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes, and do not take it just before bed.
  • Food and milk — if it upsets the stomach, take it with food or milk; absorption is little affected.

Finish the course as directed even when you feel well. Skipping doses or stopping early can let bacteria become resistant.

What are the side effects of Doxylcap (doxycycline)?

Not everyone gets side effects. Common ones are headache, nausea, vomiting and rash; diarrhoea and loss of appetite can also occur.

Mention these to a doctor if severe or persistent: vaginal irritation or discharge, painful urination, sore throat, swollen tongue. The medicine might make vaginal yeast infection more likely; a doctor may stop it if a new infection develops.

See a doctor immediately for

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, throat, tongue or lips, hives
  • rash with fever, or red, purple, peeling or blistering skin; stop the medicine at once
  • headache with blurred or double vision or vision loss, which may be signs of raised pressure in the skull; have your eyes checked promptly, as vision loss can be permanent
  • watery or bloody stools, stomach cramps or fever, during treatment or up to two months or more after stopping
  • unusual bleeding or bruising, tiredness, frequent infections, a return of fever, or joint pain
  • discolouration of adult teeth (reported as superficial, and reversible after stopping and a professional dental cleaning)

Liver toxicity has been reported rarely. This list is not complete.

Who should not take Doxylcap, and what should they watch for?

Do not use: anyone who has had an allergic reaction to any tetracycline. The UK label (emc) also rules it out in pregnancy and breastfeeding: it can harm the baby, permanently discolour its teeth and pass into milk. Tell your doctor at once if you become pregnant while taking it.

Ask a pharmacist or doctor first, because it may not suit you:

  • Children — most adults and children aged 12 or over can take it; at 8 years or under only in severe illness where the benefit outweighs the risk, as it can permanently discolour teeth and affect bone growth.
  • Liver or kidney disease, lupus, myasthenia gravis or alcohol dependence
  • Raised pressure in the skull, now or in the past — women of child-bearing age who are overweight or have had it are at higher risk.
  • Yeast infection of the mouth or vagina, stomach surgery, asthma, or diarrhoea
  • Sunlight — avoid strong sun and UV light, use sunscreen, and stop if the skin reddens.

How is Doxylcap different from Siadocin?

Doxylcap and Siadocin have the same ingredient, doxycycline, at the same strength, 100 mg. They differ in pack size and maker.

  • Doxylcap — 1 tin of 500 capsules, made by Bangkok Drug
  • Siadocin (Doxycycline) — 1 box of 10 capsules, made by Siam Bheasach

In short: the number of capsules needed depends on the course a pharmacist or doctor advises, so ask before choosing a pack size.

Can Doxylcap be taken with other medicines?

Tell a pharmacist or doctor about every medicine, herb and supplement you use before taking Doxylcap, and do not start or stop any on your own.

  • Antacids, calcium supplements, magnesium laxatives — reduce absorption; ask a pharmacist how far to space them from the dose.
  • Iron and zinc — take iron 3 hours before or 2 hours after this medicine.
  • Bismuth subsalicylate — reduces absorption.
  • Omeprazole, lansoprazole — may interact; do not start them without asking.
  • Barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin — shorten how long the drug stays in the body.
  • Warfarin and other blood thinners — their dose may need lowering.
  • Penicillin — not recommended together; it may interfere with penicillin's action.
  • Acne medicines — avoid isotretinoin, as both can raise pressure in the skull; tell the doctor about any other acne medicine.
  • Methoxyflurane — fatal kidney toxicity has been reported with tetracyclines.
  • Hormonal contraceptives — may work less well; use another method too.

How should the Doxylcap tin of 500 capsules be stored?

Storage advice from MedlinePlus:

  • Own container — keep the capsules in the tin they came in, lid tightly closed.
  • Room temperature — away from light, heat and moisture, not in the bathroom.
  • Out of children's reach — store it up high and out of sight, as many medicine containers are not child-resistant.
  • Do not share — let no one else take your medicine.
  • Unneeded medicine — dispose of it where pets, children and others cannot take it, not down the toilet; ask a pharmacist how.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the infection being treated. The NHS says most people take it once or twice a day for a few days or weeks. A pharmacist or doctor should set the number of days for your illness, and you should finish it even after you feel well, because stopping early lets bacteria become resistant. The 500 capsules in the tin do not tell you how many days to take it.

Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. In that case skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for it.

The NHS advises against alcohol while taking doxycycline, because it can stop the medicine working properly. You can eat as normal. If you drink regularly or depend on alcohol, tell a pharmacist or doctor before taking it.

The NHS says doxycycline should not affect your ability to drive, ride a bike or use machinery. If side effects bother you or do not go away, speak to a pharmacist or doctor, and keep taking it unless you are advised to stop.

Doxycycline can be used to prevent malaria. Adults take 100 mg daily, starting 1 to 2 days before travelling to a malaria area, daily while there, and for 4 weeks after leaving, for no more than 4 months in total. It does not give full protection, so use insect repellent, mosquito nets and clothing that covers the body as well.

Antibiotics such as doxycycline do not work for colds, flu or other viral infections. Taking them when they are not needed raises the risk of a resistant infection later. Have a pharmacist or doctor judge first whether your symptoms come from bacteria.

The NHS says one extra dose is unlikely to cause problems, but taking too much can sometimes be dangerous, so get medical advice straight away if you take more than directed. Bring the remaining medicine in its tin and any other medicines you take.

Before any laboratory test, tell the doctor and lab staff you are taking doxycycline, because it may falsely raise urinary catecholamine results. With long courses, a doctor may check blood, kidney and liver tests from time to time, so keep your appointments.

The shop sells it only as 1 tin (500 capsules), with no option by the strip or single capsule. See the latest price at the order button on this page.
