Product Description
Canesten Vaginal Tablet contains Clotrimazole 100 mg per pessary — an azole antifungal that disrupts the Candida cell wall so the yeast cannot survive. It treats vaginal candidiasis directly at the source: one pessary before bedtime for 6 consecutive nights, with the applicator included in the pack.
📊 Key facts
- 53% of women reported a healthcare provider-diagnosed vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lifetime (Benedict et al., BMC Women's Health, 2022) — it is very common and nothing to feel embarrassed about
- Thick white discharge resembling cottage cheese + itching = yeast infection → Canesten Vaginal Tablet / Fishy odour, greyish discharge = bacterial vaginosis (BV) → Metrolex (Metronidazole) instead
🏭 Canesten is an originator brand from Bayer, Germany, registered in Thailand and used worldwide for vaginal yeast infection treatment.
⚠️ If symptoms do not improve after completing the course, or infections recur more than twice in 6 months, consult a pharmacist.
About Canesten
What is Canesten Vaginal Tablet?
Canesten Vaginal Tablet is a pessary containing Clotrimazole 100 mg per tablet — an azole antifungal that inhibits ergosterol synthesis in fungal cell walls, causing Candida to break down and die at the source.
It acts locally inside the vagina with minimal systemic absorption, making it safe and effective. Each pack contains 6 pessaries and an applicator for easy, well-positioned insertion.
Canesten comes in two main forms: the vaginal tablet featured here (for yeast inside the vagina) and Canesten Cream for external skin fungal infections. Both use Clotrimazole but serve different purposes.
Azole antifungals like Clotrimazole work differently from antibiotics — they target fungal cells specifically rather than bacteria, so they do not disrupt the vagina's normal healthy bacteria as much, making them well suited for treating yeast infections specifically.
What conditions does Canesten Vaginal Tablet treat?
Canesten Vaginal Tablet treats vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis or thrush). Signs of a yeast infection:
- Thick white discharge resembling cottage cheese or a paste
- Itching or burning around the vagina and outer genitalia
- Stinging when urinating or during intercourse (some women)
About 90% of vaginal yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, which Clotrimazole clears effectively. This tablet does not treat bacterial vaginosis (BV) — characterised by fishy odour, grey discharge, and little itching — which needs metronidazole instead. Common triggers include antibiotics, hormonal changes, and non-breathable underwear.
Risk factors that raise the likelihood of a vaginal yeast infection include pregnancy, poorly controlled diabetes, a weakened immune system, and prolonged wear of tight clothing. If infections recur more than 4 times a year, see a doctor to identify the underlying cause.
How to use Canesten Vaginal Tablet
Easy to use with the included applicator:
- Wash hands before and after each use
- Lie down or stand with legs apart; insert the pessary with the applicator as deeply into the vagina as comfortable
- Use one pessary before bedtime, every night for 6 consecutive nights — finish the full course even if symptoms improve sooner
- Lie down for a few minutes after insertion to allow the pessary to dissolve
- Avoid tampons, vaginal douches, and sexual intercourse during treatment
This medicine may affect the strength of latex condoms and diaphragms — see the "Contraindications and precautions" section below for how to prevent this.
Try to insert the pessary at roughly the same time each night for consistent results, and keep the applicator clean before each use if it is a reusable type, following the instructions in the pack.
Side effects of Canesten Vaginal Tablet
Canesten Vaginal Tablet is widely used worldwide and is generally well-tolerated. Possible side effects include:
- Occasionally: Mild burning or irritation inside the vagina during the first few nights of treatment, which usually resolves on its own
- Rarely: Swelling or redness around the vaginal area
- Stop and seek medical advice immediately if severe allergic reactions occur — rash, swelling, difficulty breathing
Undissolved pieces of the pessary may come out of the vagina — this is normal and does not mean the medicine has not worked. Inserting before bedtime and lying down afterwards helps minimise this.
If irritation is severe or you experience allergic symptoms, stop treatment and consult a pharmacist or doctor.
Because so little of the medicine is absorbed into the body, systemic side effects such as headache or nausea are uncommon — unlike oral fluconazole, which acts throughout the body and carries a higher chance of these effects.
Contraindications and precautions for Canesten Vaginal Tablet
- Do not use if allergic to Clotrimazole or any ingredient
- Consult a pharmacist or doctor first if this is your first-ever infection, if you are under 16 or over 60, if infections recur more than twice in 6 months, or if you have abnormal bleeding or fever
- Pregnancy: Always tell your doctor or pharmacist before use — insertion technique may need adjusting
- During your period: Treatment may be less effective — ask a pharmacist whether to wait or continue
- This medicine weakens latex condoms and diaphragms — use alternative contraception during and for 5 days after treatment
If you experience sudden severe burning right after insertion, or a rash spreading to other areas, rinse with clean water, stop use immediately, and consult a pharmacist.
How quickly does Canesten Vaginal Tablet work?
After the first night, itching and burning typically begin to ease within 24–48 hours. However, always complete the full 6-night course to clear the infection fully and prevent relapse.
- Itching and burning usually improve noticeably after 2–3 nights
- Discharge gradually returns to normal after the course is finished
- If symptoms persist after 6 nights, consult a pharmacist
Recovery time can vary between individuals depending on infection severity and overall health. People with normal immunity usually see full resolution within about a week of completing the course.
Can Canesten Vaginal Tablet be used with other medicines?
Because Canesten Vaginal Tablet is minimally absorbed, it rarely interacts with other medicines. Two key points to know:
- Oral fluconazole: An oral antifungal — if used together, tell your pharmacist to avoid unnecessary duplicate treatment
- Other vaginal products: Such as lubricants or cleansing sprays — avoid concurrent use during treatment unless a pharmacist advises otherwise
For condom and contraception precautions, see the "Contraindications and precautions" section above. Always tell your pharmacist you are using a vaginal tablet before buying any other vaginal health product, to avoid duplicate treatment or reduced effectiveness of either one.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you forget one night, insert it as soon as you remember the next night and continue to complete all 6 nights — do not insert two tablets in one night to catch up. If you miss several nights or are unsure whether to restart, ask a pharmacist, since skipped nights may leave the infection untreated and increase relapse risk.
Thick white cottage-cheese-like discharge is normally a yeast infection, not a pregnancy sign. Pregnancy discharge is usually fluid, clear to milky white, without itching. Clumpy itchy discharge is most likely Candida, treatable with a vaginal tablet. If pregnant with unusual discharge, tell your doctor or pharmacist first.
Mild yeast infections may occasionally resolve on their own once the body's balance is restored, such as after stopping antibiotics. But when itching and discharge are noticeable, candidiasis usually will not clear up fully without treatment and may worsen. Canesten Vaginal Tablet clears the infection directly and faster than waiting it out.
Starting a vaginal tablet course during menstruation is generally not recommended, as blood flow can prevent the pessary from dissolving properly and reduce effectiveness. If your period arrives mid-course, ask a pharmacist whether to pause or continue. Pads are fine during treatment, but avoid tampons.
Vaginal candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted infection. In most cases a partner needs no treatment if he has no symptoms. If infections keep recurring, a doctor may suggest both partners be evaluated. During treatment, avoid intercourse so the medicine can work fully.
NHS guidance lists intravaginal clotrimazole as first-line for vaginal thrush in pregnancy, especially from the second trimester. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist first — they may advise inserting without the applicator, since oral fluconazole is generally avoided in pregnancy.
Vaginal yeast infections are treated with azole antifungals in two forms: vaginal pessaries like Canesten Vaginal Tablet (local action) or oral fluconazole (systemic). For straightforward infections, Canesten Vaginal Tablet is a widely used, effective option.
Most women can resume normal sexual activity after completing the full 6-night course, once itching and irritation have fully settled. Because this medicine weakens latex condoms and diaphragms, use alternative contraception for 5 days after the last tablet for extra safety. If itching or burning persists after finishing the course, consult a pharmacist first.
