About Gofen
What is Gofen?
Gofen is an oral pain relief medication containing Ibuprofen 400 mg. It belongs to the NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) class and is manufactured by Berlin Pharmaceutical, Thailand.
Ibuprofen works by inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes (Cyclooxygenase), which produce Prostaglandin — a substance responsible for pain, inflammation, and fever. By reducing Prostaglandin, these symptoms decrease.
Ibuprofen 400 mg provides effective relief for moderate pain, with onset within 30 minutes and duration of 4–6 hours.
What is Gofen used for?
Conditions Gofen helps with:
- Headache / Migraine — Relieves mild to moderate headaches
- Toothache — Reduces pain and inflammation from dental procedures
- Menstrual cramps (Dysmenorrhea) — Highly effective as Prostaglandin is the main cause of menstrual pain
- Muscle pain, back pain, joint pain — Reduces pain and inflammation from exercise, work, or injury
- Fever reduction — Effective antipyretic for adults
Ibuprofen vs. Paracetamol advantage: In addition to pain relief, Ibuprofen also reduces inflammation — ideal for pain with an inflammatory component such as toothache, joint pain, and menstrual cramps.
How to Take Gofen / Dosage
Adults: Take 200–400 mg every 4–6 hours as needed, after meals. Maximum 1200 mg/day (for self-medication without prescription).
Do not take on an empty stomach: Ibuprofen irritates the stomach lining. Always take after food or with milk.
Duration: Do not use for more than 10 consecutive days for pain or 3 days for fever without consulting a doctor.
If you miss a dose: Take when you remember, but skip if close to the next dose. Never take a double dose.
Important: Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
Side Effects of Gofen
Common side effects:
- Stomach pain, heartburn, nausea
- Bloating, indigestion
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Dizziness
Serious side effects (stop and seek medical attention):
- GI bleeding — vomiting blood, black tarry stools, severe stomach pain
- Stomach ulcer — severe burning stomach pain, especially on empty stomach
- Acute kidney injury — decreased urination, body swelling
- Severe allergic reaction — rash, hives, difficulty breathing, facial swelling
- Increased risk of heart attack/stroke — especially with high doses over long periods
Contraindications & Precautions
Do not use:
- Active stomach ulcer or GI bleeding
- Severe kidney impairment
- Third trimester of pregnancy — may cause premature closure of ductus arteriosus
- Allergy to Ibuprofen, Aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- History of aspirin-induced asthma
Use with caution:
- Elderly — higher risk of GI bleeding and kidney impairment
- Heart disease — increased cardiovascular risk
- Anticoagulant use (Warfarin) — increased bleeding risk
- Avoid alcohol as it increases stomach ulcer risk
How Does Gofen Compare to Other Pain Relievers?
Gofen vs. Ibrofen-400: Same active ingredient — Ibuprofen 400 mg. Different brands and manufacturers. Gofen is by Berlin Pharmaceutical; Ibrofen-400 is a generic. Equivalent efficacy — choose by preference and price.
Gofen vs. Ponstan (Mefenamic Acid): Both are NSAIDs. Ponstan is particularly popular for menstrual cramps, but Ibuprofen is equally effective for dysmenorrhoea and more versatile overall. Ibuprofen has more safety data.
Gofen vs. Paracetamol: Paracetamol relieves pain and fever but doesn't reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen does all three — ideal for inflammatory pain. Paracetamol is gentler on the stomach. They can be alternated safely.
How Long Does Gofen Take to Work?
Ibuprofen acts quickly, providing pain relief within 30 minutes. Peak effect occurs at 1–2 hours. Duration of action is 4–6 hours.
Tips:
- Taking with food reduces stomach irritation but may slightly delay onset
- For menstrual cramps, take at the first sign of pain — don't wait until it's severe
- If 400 mg doesn't provide relief, wait 4–6 hours before repeating. Maximum 1200 mg/day

Frequently Asked Questions
Same active ingredient — Ibuprofen 400 mg. Only the brand name and manufacturer differ. Gofen is by Berlin Pharmaceutical; Ibrofen-400 is a generic. Equivalent efficacy — choose by price and availability.
Always take after meals, or at minimum with milk. Ibuprofen irritates the stomach lining — taking on an empty stomach may cause stomach pain, heartburn, and increased ulcer risk.
Yes. Ibuprofen and Paracetamol work through different mechanisms and can be safely combined or alternated. Alternate every 4 hours for better pain control. However, do not combine Ibuprofen with other NSAIDs like Aspirin or Ponstan.
Very effectively. Ibuprofen is one of the most recommended medications for menstrual pain because Prostaglandin is the primary cause, and Ibuprofen directly reduces it. Take at the first sign of pain for best results.
Not recommended. Use the shortest duration necessary, ideally not exceeding 10 consecutive days. Long-term NSAID use increases risks of stomach ulcers, GI bleeding, kidney damage, and cardiovascular problems. For chronic pain, consult a doctor.
Both are NSAIDs effective for menstrual pain. Ponstan (Mefenamic Acid) is popular in Thailand specifically for dysmenorrhoea. Ibuprofen (Gofen) has more extensive research data and broader applications. Both have equivalent efficacy — choose by preference.
