Gaviscon Advance Sachets are the extra-strength formula in the Gaviscon range, packed in a portable sachet instead of a bottle. Each sachet has the standard peppermint flavour of Advance — the orange packaging just distinguishes it from other variants. It contains Sodium Alginate at twice the standard concentration.

How it works: On contact with stomach acid, Sodium Alginate reacts instantly, forming a thick, sticky raft that floats above the stomach contents and blocks reflux into the oesophagus. The higher concentration makes the raft thicker and longer-lasting, up to 4 hours.

Each sachet holds exactly one dose — no measuring spoon or bulky bottle needed. It suits people frequently out of the house or with regular nighttime heartburn.

Gaviscon Advance Sachets relieve symptoms of acid reflux and excess stomach acid, especially when carrying a bottle is not practical:

• Nocturnal heartburn — keep a sachet by the bed or in a travel bag instead of a large bottle
• Flare-ups at work or in meetings — tear and take discreetly, no spoon or water needed
• Heartburn after a big meal out — easier to carry than a bottle

How to take it: Tear open the sachet and take it immediately — no shaking needed.

• Take 1 sachet after each of 3 meals and before bedtime
• Maximum 4 sachets per day
• Each sachet holds 5-10 ml, the full Gaviscon Advance dose — no splitting or estimating, unlike the bottle, which needs a measuring spoon

When to take it: Immediately after meals or within 20-30 minutes, and always before bedtime. Avoid an empty stomach, as the raft forms thinner and works less well.

Carrying it: Small and lightweight, it fits a pocket, handbag, or travel bag — ideal for work, the gym, or a flight, with no risk of a bottle cracking or spilling.

Do not use it for more than 7 consecutive days without a pharmacist if symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Each sachet is individually sealed, so there is no opened-bottle shelf-life limit — unlike the liquid bottle, which must be used within 1-2 months once opened:

• Store below 30°C, away from direct sun and heat build-up in a parked car
• Carry it in a bag with no leak risk
• Check the expiry date on the box before use
• If a sachet is swollen, torn, or the contents look or smell different, discard it

Since each sachet is a single dose, it is easy to keep spares in a work bag, car, or suitcase — more convenient than a bottle that needs using up quickly once opened.

Gaviscon Advance Sachets share the same formula as the bottle, so side effects and precautions are identical:

• Bloating and burping — bicarbonate reacting with stomach acid releases CO₂ gas
• Mild nausea — occasional, especially above the recommended dose
• Kidney disease — extra caution needed, since potassium is a key ingredient
• Children under 12 — the adult formula is not recommended without medical advice
• Other medications — take at least 2 hours apart, as the raft may slow absorption
