Marvelon is a Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) containing Desogestrel 150 mcg and Ethinylestradiol 30 mcg, manufactured by Organon.

Desogestrel is a third-generation progestin with high selectivity for progesterone receptors, resulting in fewer androgenic side effects. Ethinylestradiol is a synthetic oestrogen that helps regulate the menstrual cycle and enhances contraceptive efficacy.

The pill works by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and thinning the uterine lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation.

Marvelon is the same brand family as Mercilon but contains a higher dose of Ethinylestradiol (30 mcg vs 20 mcg), making it better suited for those who experience breakthrough bleeding on low-dose pills.

Primary indications:

Not for: Prevention of sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms for STI protection.

Dosage: Each strip contains 21 tablets. Take 1 tablet daily at the same time each day.

How to take:

• Take for 21 consecutive days → stop for 7 days (withdrawal bleed occurs) → start new strip
• Start the first strip on day 1 of your period for immediate contraceptive effect
• If starting on another day, use condoms for the first 7 days

If you miss a pill:

• Less than 12 hours late — take it as soon as you remember, then continue as normal
• More than 12 hours late — take the missed pill immediately (may mean 2 pills in one day) and use condoms for 7 days

Common side effects:

• Nausea — usually occurs in the first 1–3 months then subsides
• Breast tenderness/swelling
• Headache
• Mood changes
• Breakthrough bleeding during initial use

Serious side effects (rare):

• DVT/PE (blood clots) — slightly increased risk from oestrogen, especially in smokers, overweight individuals, or those with family history
• High blood pressure
• Stroke — very rare

Important: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience swelling in one leg, sudden chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Do not use:

• History of DVT/PE (blood clots) or high risk factors
• Migraine with aura
• Smokers over age 35
• History of breast cancer
• Severe liver disease
• Pregnant or suspected pregnancy

Use with caution:

• High blood pressure
• Diabetes
• Overweight (BMI > 35)
• Breastfeeding — consider progestin-only pills such as Cerazette instead

Marvelon vs. Cerazette: Cerazette is a progestin-only pill (Desogestrel 75 mcg) without oestrogen. Suitable for breastfeeding, oestrogen contraindications, or blood clot risk. Marvelon is a combined pill with better cycle control.

Marvelon vs. Mercilon: Same progestin (Desogestrel) but Mercilon has lower Ethinylestradiol (20 mcg vs 30 mcg). Fewer oestrogen-related side effects but may have more breakthrough bleeding.

Marvelon vs. Yasmin: Yasmin contains Drospirenone instead of Desogestrel with anti-androgenic + anti-mineralocorticoid effects. Better for acne and water retention. Same EE dose (30 mcg).

Marvelon vs. Melodia/Yaz: Melodia/Yaz contain Drospirenone + low-dose EE 20 mcg in a 24+4 regimen. Fewer oestrogen side effects and shorter hormone-free interval.

Marvelon works through 3 main mechanisms:

• Ovulation suppression — Combined hormones suppress FSH and LH, preventing ovulation
• Cervical mucus thickening — Progestin thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate
• Endometrial thinning — Reduces the likelihood of embryo implantation
